County exec candidates Constantine, Hutchison against Eyman's I-1033

Posted by Bob Young

Dow Constantine and Susan Hutchison agree about Tim Eyman's latest initiative -- they're both against I-1033.

The initiative would limit growth of state, county and city revenue to annual inflation and population growth, with the surplus used to reduce property taxes.

The King County executive candidates were asked about I-1033 last night at a Suburban Cities Association dinner in Tukwila.

Hutchison called I-1033 a "disaster" and said she would vote against it. Constantine called it a "prescription for disaster" and he "strongly opposed" the initiative.

Northwest Progressive Institute has a transcript of their full comments. (Full disclosure: I planned to be in Tukwila but was home icing a cranky back.)

Hutchison said that while she doesn't like government taxing-and-spending, Eyman's initiative "goes too far." She'd prefer that surplus revenue go into a rainy day fund.

Speaking to the audience of city officials, Constantine cited a practical detriment of I-1033: its belt-tightening would halt annexations of unincorporated areas. Annexations relieve county government of the financial burdens of providing services to unincorporated areas.
