Gov. Chris Gregoire said she met with Jim Albaugh, the head of Boeing's commercial airplane division, Tuesday and asked if there was anything the state could do to keep a second 787 production line in Washington state.

Gregoire said she was told no.

It's not the first time she's asked.

"I've been very direct with the past CEO and the current CEO: 'Is there anything we can do.' And I have been told 'no. This is now a point where we need to have our labor-management discussions and there's nothing you can do,' " Gregoire said this afternoon.

The governor held one of her periodic briefings with reporters today to catch up on events.

There's been lots of speculation in recent months that Boeing might open up a second production line in South Carolina.

Gregoire said "I've done the analysis and I'm willing to compete with anybody in terms of where's the best place to have a second 787. I believe it's Washington state.

The governor said she told Albaugh "I'd like another meeting to talk about that business case ... I'll put us up against South Carolina any day."
