Median age of voters in primary: 59.4

Posted by Jim Brunner

As expected, Tuesday's primary was dominated by older voters.

How old? Seattle Times database whiz Justin Mayo analyzed the ballot returns as of last night and found the median age of voters in King County was 59.4. In Seattle it was slightly younger: 56.7.

More than 70 percent of the votes counted as of last night came from people who are 50 or older. The numbers could change slightly as more ballots are counted from younger people who waited to mail in their ballots.

This isn't a new trend, especially for a non-presidential primary in the middle of summer. Younger voters tend to chime in once every four years. Older voters are there every election.

Here is Mayo's breakdown of the primary voters by age:

For King County:

under 30: 6.2%
30 to 49: 23%
50 to 69: 45%
70 & older: 25.8%

In Seattle:

under 30: 8.2%
30 to 49: 28.2%
50 to 69: 41.5%
70 & older: 22.1%
