Poll says Susan Hutchison, Dow Constantine lead in executive race

Posted by Keith Ervin

Although many likely voters remain undecided in the King County executive race, a poll released today shows TV news anchor Susan Hutchison and County Councilmember Dow Constantine leading the pack in Tuesday's primary election

Thirty-one percent of respondents said they supported Hutchison, while 13 percent picked Constantine. Six percent said they favored state Rep. Ross Hunter, and 5 percent each supported state Sen. Fred Jarrett and County Councilmember Larry Phillips.

The poll of 500 voters by marketing and lobbying firm Strategies 360 and Don McDonough of DMA Market Research showed a whopping 38 percent of voters still undecided. Nevertheless, "it seems pretty clear" Constantine will be one of the top two, said Strategies 360 CEO Ron Dotzauer, because he has greater name recognition than any candidate other than Hutchison and is viewed favorably by a large proportion of voters familiar with him.

Dotzauer has contributed $1,600, the maximum allowed, to the Constantine campaign.

The poll showed Seattle Mayor Greg Nickels on track to receive a plurality of votes in the mayoral primary, but the race between challengers Mike McGinn and Joe Mallahan is too close to call for second place. Nickels polled 24 percent, McGinn 16 and Mallahan 14.

The poll also shows the 20 percent bag fee losing 53 to 40 percent.

The margin of error is 4.3 percent for the executive race, 5.6 percent for the mayor's race and bag-fee referendum..
