Others join Times' effort to unseal Hutchison records

Posted by Bob Young

Other news organizations have joined The Seattle Times in pressing King County Superior Court to unseal records from Susan Hutchison's lawsuit against her former employer KIRO-TV.

The Associated Press, KING TV, NorthWest Cable News, KOMO TV, The McClatchy Company, The (Tacoma) News Tribune, Allied Daily Newspapers of Washington, and Washington Newspaper Publishers Association are all seeking to become interveners in the case, according to a motion to unseal filed Thursday by Times' lawyer Michele Earl-Hubbard.

"It's unusual the press is all working together on this, but everyone realizes it's an important story," Earl-Hubbard said.

A candidate for King County executive, Hutchison was a news anchor for 20 years at KIRO before the station replaced her with a younger Asian-American woman. Hutchison filed a lawsuit against the station in 2003 alleging age and race discrimination. The suit was later settled and the parties agreed not to discuss details.

Of the 859 pages of records filed in the suit, 753 were sealed -- improperly, The Times contends.

Judge Timothy Bradshaw has scheduled a hearing Tuesday morning to hear arguments in the case. Bradshaw also told Hutchison's lawyer, Jon Rosen, last week to specify which records Hutchison would not object to unsealing.

Rowland Thompson, executive director of Allied Daily Newspapers of Washington, said the case was important to the 24 daily papers his group represents.

"The public needs to know a great deal about her and she has been a private employee all of her life, unlike the other candidates in the race, and this is a window into viewing her employment and stresses around that," Thompson said.

The primary is Aug. 18.
