Despite poor job approval, Nickels leads in latest poll

Posted by Jim Brunner

The latest KING 5/SurveyUSA poll shows Seattle Mayor Greg Nickels leading all challengers in his bid to win a third term as mayor. Nickels came in at 26 percent in the poll of 507 likely voters.

Seattle City Councilmember Jan Drago came in second, with 14 percent. Former Sonic James Donaldson came next with 11 percent, and challengers Mike McGinn and Joe Mallahan were at 8 percent. A quarter of those polled said they are undecided. (The poll had a 4.4 percent margin of error.)

You can view the poll results here.

While Nickels seems poised to advance beyond the Aug. 18 primary with several challengers splitting the opposition vote, his task for the general election remains tough. Another recent SurveyUSA poll put his job approval rating at just 30 percent.

The KING 5/SurveyUSA poll also found Seattle's 20-cent fee on paper and plastic grocery bags in trouble, with 51 percent saying they'd vote it down and just 42 percent in support.
