New poll shows Donaldson, bag fee gaining ground
Posted by Emily Heffter
A new poll gives two struggling campaigns reason to hope.
In the poll, commissioned by KING 5 and conducted by robo-poller Survey USA, Seattle mayoral candidate James Donaldson, whose struggling campaign I wrote about earlier this week, came in third in the eight-way race with 14 percent of respondents saying they'd vote for him.
He's only a percentage point behind City Councilmember Jan Drago, who came in second with 15 percent of the vote.
Mayor Greg Nickels came in first, with 24 percent of the vote -- not much, for an incumbent.
T-Mobile executive Joe Mallahan, who has been picking up some endorsements lately and raising a lot of money, was still trailing in the single digits. So was environmental leader and tunnel-foe Michael McGinn.
Supporters of Seattle's 20-cent fee on grocery bags are having trouble raising money. Their campaign is $5,000 in debt. But their issue saw a big jump over previous polls, with 47 percent saying they'd vote in favor of the fee. The poll said 46 percent indicated they'd vote against it.
The plastics industry raised a lot of money to get the issue on the ballot, but the campaign has seemed to stall out since then. We can't even a spokesperson for the campaign to quote in the paper, and e-mail invitations from the Seattle Times Editorial Board to come in to talk about the campaign went unanswered.
