First step in finding tunnel contractor

The state Department of Transportation has issued a request for qualifications for contractors interested in building the new Alaskan Way Viaduct tunnel.

It's the first step in selecting a contractor to build the tunnel section of the $4.2 billion project along Seattle's waterfront.

The state is asking contractors and engineers to submit a statement of qualifications by Nov. 16. The agency plans to announce in January a short list of three to four most qualified design-build teams. The team that is selected will be announced at the end of 2010.
