-Chief Justice William H. Rehnquist, died; replaced in 2005 by John G. Roberts Jr., a George W. Bush appointment.

-Harry Blackmun, retired; replaced in 1994 by Stephen G. Breyer, a Bill Clinton appointment.

-Byron White, retired; replaced in 1993 by Ruth Bader Ginsberg, a Bill Clinton appointment.

-Thurgood Marshall, retired; replaced in 1991 by Clarence Thomas, a George H.W. Bush appointment.

-William J. Brennan, retired; replaced in 1990 by David Souter, a George H.W. Bush appointment.

-Lewis F. Powell Jr., retired; replaced in 1988 by Anthony M. Kennedy, a Reagan appointment.
