Obama to raise money for Specter

The White House says President Barack Obama will raise money for Sen. Arlen Specter, who switched to the Democratic Party.

WASHINGTON —

The White House says President Barack Obama will raise money for Sen. Arlen Specter, who switched to the Democratic Party.

White House press secretary Robert Gibbs said Obama would be "happy to do it" if asked to campaign for Specter in the Pennsylvania primary. Gibbs says the Republican-turned-Democrat has the president's full support.

Specter switched parties Tuesday morning. Obama called him shortly thereafter and said he and the Democrats are "thrilled to have you."

Specter has faced a tough re-election challenge from within the GOP in Pennsylvania.
