Facts about New Mexico's death penalty:

—The state took over responsibility for executions from counties in 1929.

—Since 1933, the state has executed nine men — seven by electrocution, one by gas, one by lethal injection.

—Terry Clark's execution in 2001 for the murder of 9-year-old Dena Lynn Gore was the first since 1960.

—There are two men on death row whose sentences are not impacted by repeal.

—The repeal caps a decade of effort by opponents of execution.

—The vote to repeal was 40-28 in the House and 24-18 in the Senate.

—The new life-without-parole sentence applies to crimes committed as of July 1.
