Washington lawmakers consider Amber-like alert system for missing elderly people

A state House committee passed a bill that would create an alert system for missing elderly people similar to Amber alerts for children.

OLYMPIA, Wash. —

A state House committee passed a bill that would create an alert system for missing elderly people similar to Amber alerts for children.

The Seattle Times reports that State Patrol Capt. Jeff DeVere testified Tuesday in favor of a system for localized alerts in the area where a person is missing.

DeVere says the system must be carefully managed so it doesn't turn into something like a car alarm that people ignore.

The legislation that has already passed the Senate is sponsored by Sen. Derek Kilmer of Gig Harbor. He says a constituent's elderly mother disappeared in Memphis after apparently getting lost. She was found dead six months later.
