THE POLL: Washington Post-ABC News survey of 698 likely Virginia voters.

THE POLL: Washington Post-ABC News survey of 698 likely Virginia voters.

THE NUMBERS: Barack Obama, 49 percent; John McCain, 46 percent.

OF INTEREST: Obama and McCain are in a close race for the 13 electoral votes of Virginia, a new battleground state that last backed a Democrat for president in 1964. Overwhelmingly, respondents said the top issue in their decision was the nation's economic problems and jobs. By a split of 51 percent to 41 percent, registered voters said they believed Obama is better suited to address those issues.

DETAILS: The poll was conducted by telephone Sept. 18-21 with 698 likely voters out of a total sample of 1,001 adults in Virginia. The sampling error was plus or minus 3 percentage points.
