Mexican rock band Mana backs Obama

Mexican rock band Mana is backing Barack Obama, saying a Democrat in the White House would be better for Mexicans on both sides of the border.

MEXICO CITY —

Mexican rock band Mana is backing Barack Obama, saying a Democrat in the White House would be better for Mexicans on both sides of the border.

Lead singer Fher Olvera said Tuesday that Obama is not beholden to interest groups and "conservatives don't look upon us favorably."

The Grammy-winning band from Guadalajara has waded into politics before, criticizing the Roman Catholic church and Mexico's previous president for stances on contraception and sex education. It also has established an environmental foundation.

Mana's new video "Arde el Cielo" shows images of President Bush and Venezuela's Hugo Chavez - leaders whom the band says have no respect for human dignity.

Mana has sold more than 20 million albums since forming in the 1980s.
