Updated election results Wednesday showed a proposal to change Federal Way's form of government still trailing.

The measure to switch from a council-manager to "strong mayor" form of government was failing, with 47 percent of the vote in favor of the change, 53 percent against.

If it is approved, voters would return to the polls this fall to elect a mayor.

Currently, City Council members appoint a city manager, who oversees city staff and a budget of $47 million. The council also appoints a mayor, who plays a mostly ceremonial role.

Under the proposed system, the mayor would play a more significant role in the city's daily operations.
