OLYMPIA — Washington lawmakers are ushering in a new era of tolls to help pay for expensive bridges and selected road projects.

The state House has approved the session's main tolling bill, 59-35. Lawmakers are calling tolls the pay-as-you-go wave of the future as the gasoline tax dwindles as a revenue source.

The Senate is expected to approve the plan and Gov. Christine Gregoire supports the legislation.

The new financing system is expected to help pay for projects such as a new $4 billion Highway 520 Bridge across Lake Washington.

The legislation doesn't authorize tolls for any particular project, but anticipates that future sessions would vote on each toll project as it's ready to go.
