Aside from their stands on the issues of the day, Washington's contenders for U.S. Senate actually have quite a bit in common.

Sen. Patty Murray and her challenger, Spokane Congressman George Nethercutt, are both former Washington, D.C., outsiders who became insiders, both battle-tested politicians who have easily defeated people who underestimated them.

They do have strong differences, though, which come into focus when the subject turns to the Iraq war, the Bush tax cuts and social issues like abortion and gun control.
