Seattle Times photographer John Lok was in the right place at the right time to capture this stunning photo of a hydroplane driver leaping out of her burning boat. The Society for News Design, an international organization for news media professionals and visual communicators, honored John with an Award of Excellence in the Photography/Single Photo General News category. Best of News Design is an annual competition and winning entries are reproduced online and in an annual book titled "The Best of News Design”. Congratulations John!

Kayleigh Perkins leaps from the UL-72 Miss Foster Care hydroplane that caught fire as she taxied to shore after a test run in Lake Washington during the ULHRA spring training event Thursday, April 21, 2011. There was an explosion shortly before she leaped into the water. She was helped from the water and was okay.
