Navy destroyer out of the water

MIKE SIEGEL / THE SEATTLE TIMES

Workmen are dwarfed by the Navy destroyer in dry dock as they put the finishing touches on its seven-month restoration. The Shoup will be relaunched this week and leave for its home port in Everett.

On Monday, Mike Siegel took a tour of a 510 foot Navy destroyer dry-docked on Harbor Island. He explains how he got access to the vessel:

"Huge ships out of water are most intriguing. When I learned that the USS Shoup was in dry-dock on Harbor Island, I spent the next few months working with the Navy to set up a tour of the ship. That finally happened this week. I got an inspiring look at a Navy destroyer from the inside out, learning about how much power and how many weapons this vessel is capable of." -Mike Siegel, Staff Photographer
