Pray | Shrine of the Blessed Virgin Mary at St. James Cathedral

Posted by Kevin Fujii

ERIKA SCHULTZ / THE SEATTLE TIMES

A woman prays inside St. James Cathedral during the installation of The Most Rev. J. Peter Sartain as the fifth archbishop of the Archdiocese of Seattle on Wednesday, Dec.1, 2010, in Seattle.

Arrive early and stay late. It's a photojournalism mantra professors and professionals constantly preach to students.

Busy photographers don't always have the luxury of spending hours on a single assignment. But when the opportunity arises, it allows time for exploration. For The Most Rev. J. Peter Sartain's installation as the archbishop of the Archdiocese of Seattle, my editors gave me time to arrive a couple hours early to capture the activity at St. James Cathedral.

While waiting for my contact, I noticed the Shrine of the Blessed Virgin Mary in a beautiful room lighted only by beeswax candles. Throughout the afternoon, I made an effort to frequently return to this chapel.

When you find an opportunity for a good image, keep returning to it. It may not come right away, but if you're patient, something lovely may come of it.
