A great blue heron finds a platform for fishing in the Nisqually National Wildlife Refuge on Dec. 16, 2010, near Olympia.
Photojournalist Alan Berner captures some of the smaller details of the big changes at the Nisqually National Wildlife Refuge. For more than 100 years, dikes kept the tide out of the Nisqually estuary. Beginning in the fall of 2009, the dikes were removed. Salmon are already returning and a new boardwalk will be opening for visitors.

Refuge manager Jean Takekawa walks on a section of the new, one-mile long, boardwalk. Parts of the walkway are currently under construction with plans to open in its entirety early next year.

Grand views, weather permitting, of Mount Rainier will be seen from the new boardwalk. A cap cloud can be seen forming over the peak of the mountain.
