Seattle Times Photos of the Year, 2008

Nov. 5 - When news broke of Barack Obama's victory and people took to the streets outside the Showbox, my first thought was how terrible it would be for our city, on such a momentous night, to end up in anarchy. When I arrived, all signs pointed to my fears. But as I waded into the crowd I realized I was photographing unity, not dissent. I saw white people and black, old and young. I was being given the great honor to witness a defining moment in history. --Thomas James Hurst
