Shoes Make Guinness World Record

Eight-year-old Peter Wajda from Mount Laurel, New Jersey stands in front of some of the 10,512 shoes on display July 2, 2008 in the courtyard at the National Geographic Society in Washington, DC. National Geographic Kids magazine walked into the Guinness World Record books with the longest chain of shoes. Peter organized a shoe drive recruiting family, schoolmates and his pediatrician and collected 509 shoes. The used sneakers will be shipped off to Nike's Reuse-a-Shoe program which will recycle them into material that will be used to build athletic surfaces such as basketball courts and playgrounds.
