Celebrating the power of the paddle | Aug. 1
Singing traditional songs and shouting cries that echo off the walls of the Ballard Locks, members of coastal tribes celebrate near the end of the "tribal journey" — a canoe pilgrimage that some had been making for three weeks. At center is Michael Pavel, a Skokomish tribe member and Ph.D in education who teaches at Washington State University. One person drowned during the voyage when a Canadian canoe capsized in the Strait of Juan de Fuca.
