The largest section, a 12,500 pound, 34-ft segment of a 130-ft Western Red Cedar tree is unloaded Tuesday, March 15, 2011 at the Seattle Center's Center Square, just West of EMP. It will be carved into a memorial pole honoring the life of John T. Williams, a Ditdaht master carver, who was shot and killed by Ian Birk, former Officer of the Seattle Police Department. The tree was felled by Manke Lumber Company and donated to the carvers. The cedar log will be carved into a totem by members of Williams family, including Rick Williams, and other carvers. It will be on the Seattle Center grounds until April 30, 2010. After that date, the pole will be moved to Waterfront Park, just South of the Seattle Aquarium. The public is invited to come watch the carvers at work.
