Under the watchful eye of "The American Doughboy," scores of volunteers places about 5,000 flags at the graves of veterans early Monday morning on Memorial Day at Evergreen-Washelli cemetery. The 14-foot, 3,500-pound sculpture by Alonzo Victor Lewis, is a World War I memorial unveiled in May of 1932. It had been placed in various locations before moving to the cemetery in 1998.
