
The Space Needle
Rising above all other icons at a height of 605 feet, it was literally created on a napkin. The year was 1959 and Eddie Carlson, a hotel and airline executive and one of Seattle's movers, was vacationing in Germany. At a restaurant, he sketched his vision for a symbol of the science and technology that marked the Seattle World's Fair of 1962 the Century 21 Exposition at Seattle Center.
