Cranes fly over marshes near Linum, Eastern Germany. On their way from the wetlands of Russia, Scandinavia and Eastern Europe, the migratory birds pause here before continuing their journey to Africa and Southern Europe, where they will stay the winter. Conservationists expect a total of 180,000 animals to cross the region this season, which lasts until mid-November.
