Hole House No. 2Gives new meaning to 'seeing the light'The old house was scheduled for demolition to make way for a contemporary Fremont remodel. And it seemed like a fun thing to do, drilling the place full of holes just to see what it would look like. Shafts of light searing the darkness, a Swiss cheese of a cottage. A Darth Vader highway of light sabers. It was fun. And cool. So when Robert Hutchison, of Hutchison & Maul Architecture, decided to turn his old Wallingford/Fremont (Wallingmont? Freford?) garage into an art studio last summer, he and his partner, Tom Maul, got the drills out again. This is Hole House No. 2 (they tried for Chainsaw House and then Sawzall House, but those didn't resonate). And this time the pair came across colored acrylic rods and thought those would look good plugged into some of the holes. Shots of red, yellow and blue among the sun's stark white light. The piece lived for two days. The day after a party in honor of the holey-building-now-art-piece, a sort of architectural wake, it, too, was no more.
