A Mother's Love

I am sitting at my kitchen table, dabbing delicious tears as I read Paula Bock's beautiful story on being a mother ("Before and After," May 8). My girls are 26 and 20 now, and your story took me back to when they were just days and weeks and months old. It is so easy to forget the agony and the ecstasy of being immersed in motherhood and trying to hold tight to your own identity and self-image. I needed a truly non-Hallmark way to celebrate Mother's Day. Your story has prompted me to write a love note to my girls again and tuck it away as I used to when they were younger.

Simple isn't easy

I've been struggling with "what is a quality life?" issues for years now ("The Simple Life," April 10). I make my living providing television programming to mobile phones so that we can never be more than an arm's length away from a constant stream of world news, Hollywood entertainment and music videos. I write this on Sunday morning, the only day my wife and two kids are in the same place. I am clearly in the produce-and-spend hangover zone looking for the supposed value secured from all my professional pursuits.

I wonder how many people read the article and paused a moment as they paged through their copy of Pacific Northwest looking for Windermere's luxury-homes ad ... where average prices appear to be $2 million-plus?
