A plastic legacy

Blasted Plastic! ("The Problem With Plastic," April 23) No doubt the solution will involve a Navy retrofitted factory ship with a plastic gasifier that will produce hydrogen from the garbage plastic. (The hydrogen would then be off-pumped to fuel mini-skimmers that trace across the water with large sieves collecting the plastic — it would be net energy zero!) Plastic is going to be a legacy that we are going to spend a lot of time and energy trying to correct.

A modest proposal for wine

Thank you for calling attention to a phenomenon that has left me reeling, literally, since my return to the Pacific Northwest three months ago after two decades in France (Taste, "Punch Drunk," March 26).

The high alcohol content found in the vast majority of American wines finds an unfortunate echo in many of the wines produced Down Under. Last spring I asked my local wine merchant in Paris what he thought of the Barossa Valley Shiraz he was selling, and his reply says it all — very nice as a dessert wine, but too heavy, sweet and overpowering to accompany a meal.

Here is my modest proposal for restaurant owners: Indicate, on your menu, the alcohol content of the wines you serve. I, for one, am getting tired of having to ask. In stores, one at least has the option of taking the bottle from the shelf and looking before committing to the purchase.
