IF YOU'RE mourning the loss of Elliott Bay Book Company's Pioneer Square location, now you can forever own a memento from the old store. This ancient world globe, available at the RE Store, used to frequent the window displays at Elliott Bay. With the store's recent move to Capitol Hill, staff couldn't find space for it, says store manager Tracey Taylor.
Bookstore staff used items such as this globe to create themed window displays at the Pioneer Square location. The globe, which Taylor thinks has been at Elliott Bay for at least 20 years, was likely used in travel or world politics displays. Parting with it was a matter of space, because the new store doesn't have room for large window displays, she says.
The globe, constructed of an aluminum-like material, was made by Denoyer Geppert, a science-model company near Chicago. It's dented and rusty in spots, but still rotates and spins as it should. The continents are painted a deep blue and outlined with sparkly gold lines. Country borders and sizes are outdated, but this relic of the past captures the world as it once was.
For sale: It's going for $400.
Dimensions: The entire piece is about 4 feet tall, and the globe's circumference is 5 feet.
Suggested use: It would look stunning featured in a study or library nook. But don't rely on its aged markings and boundaries for a geography lesson.
