Rockport State Park offers 'Deep Forest' tours, activities
Rockport State Park's 600-year-old trees are the focus of a month of special tours and activities in Skagit County.
Learn more about old-growth forest this month during Rockport State Park's "Deep Forest Experience" days, the remaining Saturdays in January.
The series of free educational walks and activities is presented by Washington State Parks in conjunction with this month's Skagit Eagle Festival.
Saturdays from 10 a.m. to 2:30 p.m., offerings include 30-minute family-friendly guided walks, "Into the Deep Forest," an introduction to old-growth forest among the park's 600-year-old trees. Also offered is "The Changing Forest," a 60-minute walk with a naturalist focusing on how and why the forest changes over time. Self-guided walks at the park off Highway 20 near Rockport, Skagit County, are also an option.
In the Old Growth Craft Area, visitors may paint forest scenes, make leaf prints, make necklaces using branches from old-growth trees, and more. Children are invited to search for a variety of old-growth items, with prizes offered to those who complete the search.
Free popcorn will be available.
For more information, call 360-755-9231 and ask for Steven or Jane.
