What happened to summer? All of a sudden, it's harvest time. I plan to spend the weekend putting up my annual batch of pesto and mapping out a plan for doing Jefferson County's annual self-guided farm tour on Sunday, Sept. 19. It's the season for farms and food.

BRING IN THE HARVEST: Visit 17 farms this Saturday and Sunday on the Whidbey Island Farm Tour. Brochures and maps available at farms and several other Whidbey Island locations including Langley Visitor and Information Center. Details on Page 10. Saturday is also the day for the annual Seattle Tilth Harvest Fair at the Good Shepherd Center in Wallingford. The organic farmers' marketplace is always popular at this annual event. Page 7.

Gardners will want to make it to the Friends of the Conservatory fall plant sale at Volunteer Park and the Fall Gardening Festival at Sky Nursery. See Page 7 for details. There's also the Urban Picnic on Sunday with food prepared by local chefs, live music, local wine and beer. Proceeds benefit scholarships to Quillisascut Farm School. Details on Page 5.

WEEKEND RIDES/WALKS: Catch the Magnolia Bike the Bluff event on Sunday, a family-friendly 5- or 7-mile ride or walk around my neighborhood. Or head to West Seattle for Spokespeople West Seattle, an easy 11-mile ride with stop at the farmers market (another great fall stop for fresh organic veggies and produce). Details on Page 5.

Walkers, head to the Central District on Saturday for an art walk with exhibits, demos, performances, food and music. See Page 10.

IRON GIRLS UNITE: Childhood cancer research will benefit from registration proceeds for the Iron Girl Seattle Run and Walk Sunday at Green Lake. Details on Page 5.

FALL READS: If none of the above interests you, how about just sitting down in a chair and reading a good book?

Stock up at the Friends of Shoreline Library book sale or the Friends of the Des Moines Library sale. Details on Page 10.

WOODEN BOATS: I never need an excuse to go to Port Townsend. But in case you do, this is the weekend for the annual Port Townsend Wooden Boat Festival. See Page 5 for the details.
