Recreation at Mount St. Helens, 30 years after the blast
Where: Roslyn, Kittitas County
When: June 19-20
What: Roslyn hosts the Northern Lights Festival, part of the annual Greenway Days celebrating the Mountains to Sound Greenway, with festivals, hikes, bike rides, horse rides and more along Interstate 90 from Ellensburg to Seattle. The historic coal-mining town of Roslyn commemorates the 20th anniversary of the TV series "Northern Exposure," filmed there.
Stops before and after
Sip something sweet: Take part in a summer-solstice tradition, tasting mead (honey wine), at Vintage Vine Wine Shop and Antiques (until 7 p.m. June 19); 104 N. First St., Roslyn; 509-649-3064.
Follow the path of history: The 4.7-mile, multiuse Coal Mines Trail follows an abandoned Northern Pacific coal train spur, circa 1886, past slag piles and old mines, linking to Roslyn's neighboring towns, Cle Elum and Ronald. Interpretive signs mark sites related to mining history. See www.destinationkittitas.com/cmtrail.html.
Golf with a view: Just up the road from Roslyn, Suncadia Resort offers the 18-hole Prospector golf course, a scenic, rolling course surrounded by pines and Cascade Mountain vistas. Book a tee time, or book a room and make a weekend of it. www.suncadiaresort.com.
