Seafair officially kicks off with Pirates Landing, Milk Carton Derby

Seafair kicks off with the Pirates Landing at Alki Beach, the Milk Carton Derby at Green Lake and the Wallingford Kiddie Parade and Street Fair.

Seattle times staff reporter; seattletimes.com

Watch the Seafair Pirates storm Alki beach Saturday.

The event kicked off of Seafair's "celebrating 60 years of summer" season of festivals, parades and other community events, many featuring appearances by the pirates, who have been swashbuckling since 1949.

Seafair's other traditional opening event, the Milk Carton Derby, took place at Green Lake Saturday, with nearly 100 watercraft competing for prizes for speed or style.
