Seattle to take party to streets in car-free events

Seattle's Summer Streets program closes streets to cars so cyclists and pedestrians reign.

Seattle Times staff

Pedestrians and bicyclists own the road at "Celebrate Seattle Summer Streets" car-free events this summer.

Spend a day at Alki Beach May 31, with Alki Avenue Southwest closed to vehicles from California Way Southwest to 63rd Avenue Southwest 9 a.m.-5 p.m. Along with a leisurely day at the beach, there's a 5K run/walk in the morning, stunt bicyclist show in the afternoon and sidewalk sales all day. Other locations and times when streets will be closed to motor vehicles:

• Pike Place in the Pike Place Market will be open for pedestrians and cyclists only, every Sunday from June through September.

Discovery Park, June 7;

Interlaken Park, June 14;

Seward Park, June 21;

Magnuson Park, June 28;

Bicycle along Lake Washington Boulevard from Mount Baker Beach to Seward Park with cars prohibited 10 a.m.-6 p.m. at Bicycle Sundays weekly throughout the summer (with the exception of July 5, 26 and Aug. 2).

University Way from North 50th to North 45th Streets is car-free 9 a.m.-4 p.m. July 11, including extended hours and a cook-off at the weekly Farmer's Market and other activities sponsored by the U-District Chamber of Commerce.

The Rainier Heritage Parade kicks off Rainier Valley Summer Streets at 11 a.m. Aug. 8, with each block through the Columbia City and Hillman City neighborhoods hosting music, health and other themed activities along car-free streets until 3 p.m.
