When: June 17-21
What: Festival featuring concerts and competition. Concert highlights include former Space Needle accordionist Andy Mirkovich and the yodeling-singing S-Bahn Band, whose multilingual repertoire includes "Drink, Drink" from "The Student Prince."
Stops before and after:
Deception Falls: These stairstep waterfalls, with a short interpretive loop trail nearby, make a pleasant, easy-access break before going over Stevens Pass on Highway 2.
The '59er Diner: With its counter jukeboxes and 1950s/1960s memorabilia, this is a burger joint with a difference. It boasts "regular Elvis sightings." 15361 Highway 2, Coles Corner. www.59erdiner.com.
Lake Wenatchee State Park: Picnic spots, a swimming beach and horseback riding. www.parks.wa.gov.
Chumstick Valley detour: Take a break from Highway 2 with this two-lane meander through quiet farm country. Highlight along the way: Plain Hardware (18636 Beaver Valley Road, Plain), which hosts the Plain Valley Farmer's Market from mid-June through mid-October. www.plainhardware.com.
