A-Y-P anniversary: 100 years ago, Seattle celebrated its first world's fair
A roundup of summer events marking the 100th anniversary of Seattle's Alaska-Yukon-Pacific Exposition.
In 1909, Seattle met the world, as the city hosted the Alaska-Yukon-Pacific Exposition. It was our first world's fair.
Special exhibits and events throughout the summer commemorate the event's 100th anniversary:
A-Y-P at Northwest Folklife Festival
May 22-25 Festival kickoff event with Chinese lion dancers and Nordic musicians in a 21st-century version of the original A-Y-P opening ceremonies, 3 p.m. May 23, Seattle Center Mural Amphitheatre; demonstrations and presentations on the A-Y-P at The Seattle Times Narrative Stage on Fisher Terrace throughout the festival, Seattle Center, Seattle (www.nwfolklife.org). Olmsted Legacy of the A-Y-P
June 1-Sept. 26 Friends of Seattle's Olmsted Parks host walking tours to explore the Olmsted legacy of the Alaska-Yukon-Pacific Exposition and the evolution of the UW campus, including Olmsted Brothers layout and landscape features, 10 a.m.-noon May 30, June 27, July 25, Aug. 29 and Sept. 26 from the Burke Museum of Natural History and Culture, University of Washington, 17th Avenue Northeast and Northeast 45th Street, Seattle; free, donations requested, preregister (425-885-3173).
Klondike Gold Rush Park exhibit

Vintage Auto Race
July 12 Re-enacting the coast-to-coast race of 1909, the national Model T Club drives more than 50 vintage vehicles from New York City to Seattle, expected to arrive starting at approximately 10 a.m. July 12 at Drumheller Fountain, University of Washington, Seattle (www.ayp100.org).
