Photographer: Nancy Fletcher, Kent

Photo taken: August 2008, Lime Kiln State Park, San Juan Island

Photographer's description: "Our family arrived at Lime Kiln Park just in time to see a spectacular parade of orcas. After attempting to snap photos of the elusive whales, we spotted the Lime Kiln lighthouse. This photo, looking north with Canada in the distance, was taken with a Nikon Coolpix."

Expert says: "The most powerful element in this photo is the natural landscape frame encircling the lighthouse. By placing the structure at center and exposing for it, the branches, land and rocks fall into dark shadow. This adds a nice depth to the image and draws our attention to the subject beyond. Looking for natural frames is an effective way to add interest to your pictures."
