Long Beach Peninsula has ocean on its side
The ocean! And a 28-mile stretch of beach that makes (debatable) claims at being the world's longest. An eclectic mix of funky old beach cottages, modern condos and vintage hotels.
Toting up the gas bill
To calculate the gas cost for these trips, we used EPA highway mileage figures for the 2008 Toyota Prius (45 mpg) and 2008 Lincoln Navigator 2WD (18 mpg). Results were based on a gasoline price of $3.75 per gallon.Get ski and boarding conditions all winter long with webcams, snow alerts and more at seattletimes.com/snowsports
What's the draw?
The ocean! And a 28-mile stretch of beach that makes (debatable) claims at being the world's longest. An eclectic mix of funky old beach cottages, modern condos and vintage hotels. There's a rewarding array of foodie-inspired eateries of every ilk. Plus Jake the Alligator Man at Marsh's Free Museum.
What's new this summer?
A "Blues & Seafood" evening joins the annual Jazz & Oysters event in August. Cape Disappointment State Park hosts a free Waikiki Beach Concert Series on the second and fourth Saturdays of June, July and August (2 p.m.). And Washington's coastal recreational salmon fishery has a new allure with the recent closure of salmon fishing off California and Oregon.
If you go
Miles from Seattle: 171
Round-trip gas cost for Prius hybrid*: $28.50
Round-trip gas cost for Navigator SUV*: $71.25
Lodging worth a look:
• Akari Bungalows, Long Beach. Renovated 1930s cottages with a young aesthetic; no view but only steps from the beach, in the center of the action. $145-$175 for August Saturday; 360-642-5267 or www.akaribungalows.com.
• Inn at Harbour Village, Ilwaco. It seems an unlikely conversion, but a 1928-vintage Presbyterian Church in classic weathered shake siding makes a charming inn, with its own wedding chapel if you need one. $135-$165 for August Saturday; 888-642-0087 or www.innatharbourvillage.com.
• Lighthouse Oceanfront Resort, Long Beach. Your choice: 1950s cottages or modern beachfront town houses, a short walk from the dunes, with covered pool. $54.50-$249 for August Saturday; 877-220-7555 or www.lighthouseresort.net.
Dining you won't likely regret:
• Port Bistro. Fine dining. This little place doesn't look like much, but it doesn't have to once you've started eating. Best chowder on the coast. 235 Howerton Way, Port of Ilwaco. 360-642-8447 or www.theportbistro.com.
• 42nd Street Cafe. High-quality roadhouse food, ranging from fried green tomatoes to New Orleans-style muffaletta penne pasta. 4201 Pacific Way, Seaview. 360-642-2323 or www.42ndstreetcafe.com.
