Photographer: Ben Smith, Bellevue
Photo taken: Jan. 16, Rockport, Skagit County
Photographer's description: "Spent the day up near Rockport on the Skagit River photographing eagles. Taken at 10:30 a.m. with Canon 400D and Canon 500mm f/4 IS."
Expert says: "Soft, filtered winter light illuminates the beautiful feathered pattern of this eagle's wings. The photographer chose a perfect exposure to bring out these details and help the eagle's sleek profile stand out against the light background. I also like how the moss-covered branches frame the bird. Overall, I think this image is superb."
