Photographer: Steve Rima, Federal Way

Photo taken: October 2007

Photographer's description: Rima tells us this photo of a Japanese maple was taken in his front yard after an early morning rain.

Expert says: Using a camera to focus on nature's hidden details is one of the great advantages of photography. This reader was careful to look beyond the familiar leaves of a Japanese maple to reveal something different. By using a shallow depth of field, he helped direct our view past layers of leaves onto the dew-covered branch. Exploring the visual options a simple subject can present is a rewarding photographic challenge.
