Lighting up the Northwest, one yard at a time

There are holiday lights galore in our region, worthy of an evening's drive. Here's a list of home displays suggested by our readers.

Seattle

Jeff and Sandi Bates, 5021 44th Ave. S., Columbia City neighborhood. 20,000 lights illuminate the house, yard and walkways, with a Nativity set, Santa, reindeer and a shooting star.

Charlie and Marion Deardorff, 3435 Walnut Ave. S.W., West Seattle. Featuring Santa and his reindeer and about 20,000 lights. They tell us the scene looks like Santa's house.

41st Avenue Southwest to 4000 S.W. Concord St. West Seattle neighborhood decorated. Off Southwest Barton Street (up from Fauntleroy ferry dock). Many people park and walk through neighborhood.

Chris Walker, 3201 36th Ave. S.W., West Seattle. Front yard features a 27-foot-tall Christmas tree made of green lights, a replica of a spinning Swedish angel carousel.

Tony and Shari Fox, 5218 35th Ave. S.W., West Seattle. More than 7,000 lights decorate the house and walkway. House is three houses south of the Camp Long entrance.

Don Rice, 2128 47th Ave. S.W., West Seattle. About 7,000 lights, a 50-foot tall tree and the Peanuts gang, with music most nights.

Jon and Anne Manos, 1422 E. Aloha St., Capitol Hill. The house and surrounding foliage is outlined in white lights, with a Christmas tree on the second-floor balcony, wreaths on the columns and Santa and a star on the roof; lights are on 5-11 p.m. daily.

Sharon and Fred Ehrig, 3916 Woodlawn Ave. N., Wallingford area. About 15,000 lights illuminate the house, with 165 lighted candy canes, 177 lighted snowflakes and reindeer, including Rudolph in flight. Santa rocks on the front porch from 5:30 to 9 p.m. every night until Dec. 23.

Casey Hendrickson, 6543 N.E. Windermere Road, Windermere neighborhood. More than 60,000 lights.

Candy Cane Lane, Park Road Northeast (off Northeast Ravenna Boulevard, near Ravenna Park). Annual holiday light display with multiple homes decorated with lights and figures. Street lighted 4-11 p.m. weekdays and 4 p.m.-midnight Christmas Eve, Christmas and New Year's Eve, featuring music until 10 p.m. each day.

Russ and Phyllis Kintrea, 6303 Sixth Ave. N.E. Thousands of icicle and multicolored lights, with Christmas bows, trees, Santa, polar bears, snowmen, nutcracker, ginger- bread train and an 8-foot snow globe.

Dan Pardy, Dan and Vonnie Breidenstein, 10723 Densmore Ave. N., Northgate neighborhood, between I-5 and Aurora Avenue North. Animated display. One section is a winter wonderland with woodland animals skiing, skating and having fun in the snow. Peek into Santa's workshop in the second section to watch the elves building, painting, wrapping and packing the toys into Santa's sleigh. The display will be turned on from 5-10 p.m. Monday through Thursday and until midnight on weekends through Jan. 1.

Olympic Manor. This North Seattle neighborhood, created after the closure of Olympic View Golf Club 50 years ago, is a longtime Seattle holiday favorite, with dozens of decorated homes. Enter at Northwest 85th Street and 23rd Avenue Northwest.

Gail and Kathy McCormick, 9234 13th Ave. N.W., Crown Hill neighborhood. Every day from 5 to 10 p.m. nearly 20 trees throughout the property are lit for the season, with polar bears, Santa and a snowman; displays feature more than 10,000 lights.

C. Chow & D. Thane, 5530 Wallingford Ave. N. Mini fantasy flower garden of electric flowers.

Judy Darrow, 516 N.E. 120th St. Santa and helper, giant bear, reindeer, singing angels, snowmen.

Athan Tramountanas, 3432 N.W. 64th St. Lighted "stage" out front, with inflatables.

Eastside

Thom and Carolyn Conroy, 20541 N.E. 37th Way, Timberline neighborhood of Sammamish. Home decorated like a gingerbread house with red and green lights.

Northeast 42nd Street cul-de-sac, at 204th Avenue Northeast, Timberline neighborhood of Sammamish. Eleven houses on the street have different Christmas themes, with nutcrackers, a "Polar Express" display and other holiday decorations.

The Parkinson family, 2509 227th Place N.E., Sammamish. Waterfall, lake, field and herd of deer all made of lights. Also, many trees, bushes and inflatable figures are lighted, as well as a giant candy-cane archway. More than 50,000 lights. Will be collecting donations for Northwest Harvest.

William Swearingen and Darin Grant, 16010 S.E. Fifth St., Bellevue. House and yard decorated with more than 6,000 lights in waves of white, red and green.

Kevin Matheson, 20606 N.E. 85th St., Redmond. Union Hill area. More than 20,000 lights decorate the house, trees and bushes. Falling snowflakes.

Bill and Merrily Hornell, 15320 S.E. 48th Drive, Bellevue (Eastgate), in the Horizon Crest area. More than 10,000 lights, decorated window and inflated decorations.

Steve Sanelli, 4724 192nd Place S.E., Issaquah. Thousands of lights decorate the house and trees, with Santa and reindeer.

North

Rob and Arlene Karmil, 707 204th St. S.E., Bothell, off Filbert Road. Thrashers Corner area. More than 20,000 bulbs, numerous displays, nativity and Christmas characters, including an 8-foot animated snow globe, with music playing nightly.

228th Place Southwest, Brier. Decorations adorn several homes in this cul-de-sac in Brier's Timberline Park neighborhood. To get there: From northbound Interstate 5, take the 44th Avenue West exit in Lynnwood; go south on 44th, turn left at 228th Street Southwest; go east on 228th; turn right at the turnoff just past 39th Avenue West, onto 228th Place Southwest. From southbound I-5, take the 196th Street Southwest exit in Lynnwood; turn right at 196th; left at 44th Avenue West; left at 228th Street Southwest; turn right at the turnoff just past 39th Avenue West, onto 228th Place Southwest.

Mark Hunsinger, 14011 Ash Way, Lynnwood. More than 25,000 bulbs, a Christmas village, Santa and Rudolph, 30-foot tree with 5,000 lights.

RJ and Pam Monfiletto, 1905 206th St. S.W., Lynnwood. Display features more than 25,000 lights and 120 handmade cutouts. See Santa and his reindeer, singing penguins and gingerbread houses.

Randi Punteney, 823 Northview Drive, Burlington, Skagit County. Hundreds of lights that dance to Christmas music.

Jim Zahnow, 8216 216th Pl. SW, Edmonds. Red and white lights outline the house. Santa and Rudolph escape the chimney. The polar bear watches over the deer and the train as another sled is pulled through the yard by reindeer.

Larry Johnson, 604 Old Cascades Highway E., Skykomish. 1924 Dutch Colonial, trimmed both on front (street) and back for passing trains and those visiting the town. For trains going east/west on Highway 2 (to/from Leavenworth), the house and yard are highlighted with blue LED lights and many displays. From the north (track) side notice the ½-inch diameter fiber-optic lighting (the largest diameter fiber made, he tells us) as they change colors.

South

Rick and Vicki Johnson, 18602 Marine View Drive S.W., Normandy Park. Fantasy winter wonderland full of gifts and toys under a tree with a shooting star tree topper. Santa waves to guests from the garden gazebo with a candy-cane cottage and gingerbread house in the background.

Colewood Lane, Normandy Park. Each home in this cul-de-sac is lit with decorations. From First Avenue South, turn west onto Southwest 186th Street. Drive straight a couple of blocks until you reach Colewood Lane.

Viewpointe at Redondo, Southwest 300th Place off First Avenue South, Federal Way. Almost all of the 44 homes in this neighborhood are decked with lights and decorations for the holidays. Santa stops by often to help collect donations for the Federal Way Food Bank. If you can't find Santa, take your donation to 30014 Second Court S., a residence in the neighborhood.

Jerome, Shailyn and Dayton Drazkowski, 2215 S.W. 332nd St., Federal Way. More than 50,000 lights illuminate the house and yard, with an 8-foot snow globe, nativity scene, bubble machine, gingerbread village and North Pole scene (a total of 18 inflatables); accepting donations for the Federal Way Senior Center food drive.

Jeff Franz, 308 Fourth Ave. S.E., Pacific. About 20,000 lights decorate pillars, trees and the house. Franz's house won the 2004 Pacific lighting contest.

Scott Buckmiller, 26116 112th St. E., Buckley. Ginger-bread house.

WEST

Kevin Hawkins, 9223 N.E. Bluefin, Bainbridge Island. For the last 10 years, families have visited the Hawkins' home in Commodore West just down the street from Bainbridge High School to enjoy the thousands of lights, blow molds (Mickey Mouse and Minnie in Santa outfits, Snowmen, Santa Claus and more), 10- and 15-foot blowups (including polar bears and nutcracker) and dozens more decorations.
