Razor-clam digging may begin Jan. 27-29

Razor-clam lovers could get another chance to dig into most coastal beaches later this month.

The final marine-toxin test for razor clams were taken on Tuesday, and if levels show the clams are safe to eat, then digging will be open Jan. 27-29 at Long Beach, Twin Harbors, Mocrocks and Kalaloch from noon to midnight each day. Copalis Beach will be closed.

Low tides: Jan. 27, minus-0.3 feet at 5 p.m.; Jan. 28, -0.7 at 5:49 p.m.; and Jan. 29, -1.0 at 6:34 p.m. To find out if the season is approved, see the state Fish and Wildlife Department Web site, wdfw.wa.gov.

Rossland Winter Carnival is Jan. 27-29 in Rossland, B.C., the location of Red Resort. The event includes luge racing and a fireworks show. Details: www.rossland.com/Events/Carnival.html.

Free classes will be held this month for people who want to help prevent poaching of the state's fish and wildlife. The two-hour training sessions are sponsored by state Fish and Wildlife, the Eyes in the Woods Association and other outdoor organizations and sporting goods stores.

Come learn about volunteer opportunities at Discovery Park's open house 1-3 p.m. Saturday at the Visitor Center, 3801 W. Government Way in Seattle. Meet volunteers, talk to park staff and find out what positions suit your need. Details: 206-386-4231.

State Fish and Wildlife officials are looking for public comment on various hunting options for the 2006-08 seasons.
