New trail dedicated at Deception Pass State Park on Whidbey Island Seattle Times staff reporter The Pacific Northwest Trail Association and the Washington State Parks and Recreation Commission recently dedicated a new trail and trailhead at Deception Pass State Park on Whidbey Island. The two-mile Pass Lake Trail project is part of the State Park's Centennial 2013 Plan, which provides enhancements, new destinations, trails, water access and conservation activities.
Orvis Spring Days is tomorrow through May 8 at the Orvis Store, 911 Bellevue Way in Bellevue, and features free seminars and events. Tomorrow: 10 a.m.-4 p.m., casting demonstration with instructor Cliff Barker; and 4-6 p.m., accuracy casting competition. Saturday: 10-11 a.m., coastal cutthroat trout in local rivers with author Les Johnson; 11 a.m.-noon, fly-fishing Neah Bay for coho salmon with Chris Bellowe, owner of TopWater Charters in Neah Bay; noon-1 p.m., Olympic Peninsula fly-fishing with guide Ron Gras; 1-2 p.m., Yakima River Canyon with Steve Joyce of Red's Fly Shop in Yakima; 2-3 p.m., Washington's top spots with writer Doug Rose; and 3-4 p.m., fly-fishing in Puget Sound with Keith Robbins, owner of A Spot Tail Salmon Guide. The Northwest Marine Trade Association is seeking application letters from organizations requesting grant money for boating-related programs or events. The NMTA's $7,500 grant program was established as part of the association's Grow Boating Program, which is aimed at increasing recreational boating. Those interested should submit a letter with the following: a description of the program/event; how the program/event is helping or will help grow boating in the Northwest; and amount of grant money requested.
The Camano Island Watershed Program has invited the Adopt-A-Stream Foundation to teach locals how to better understand the state of the island's streams. The Island County Public Works Department and State Department of Ecology is holding a workshop 6-8:30 p.m. May 4 at the New Senior Center, 606 Arrowhead Road on Camano Island. Tom Murdoch, co-author of the "Streamkeepers Field Guide," will talk about where island residents can find existing stream information and how to connect with others interested in local streams. On May 7, 8:30 a.m.-4:30 p.m. (the meeting location to be announced ) there will be training for island locals to learn how to conduct a watershed inventory and how to monitor the physical, biological and chemical characteristics of streams.
