Boat show to open tomorrow at two sites

The Seattle Boat Show will run tomorrow through Jan. 23 at the Qwest Field Event Center and at Chandler's Cove on Lake Union.

More than 1,000 boats — including fishing boats, inboard cruisers, runabouts, kayaks, sailboats and inflatables — will be on display, with a wide array of accessories and the latest high-tech gadgets.

A 30,000-square-foot fishing center will offer more boats, tackle and gear, plus a stage for more than 30 fishing seminars.

Show hours are noon-9 p.m. Fridays, 10 a.m. to 8 p.m. Saturdays, 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. Sundays, and noon to 8 p.m. Monday-Thursday. Cost is $9 for adults. A free shuttle will help transfer showgoers between the venues.

Some of the top freeskiers are heading to Red Resort in Rossland, B.C., for the Molson Canadian Freeskiing Championship today through Saturday.

Competitors will test their ability on the steep, gladed terrain of nearby Mount Roberts, one of Red Resort's five peaks.

The freeskiing championship is the first stop on the International Freeskiers Association (IFSA) North American Tour. Winners will be awarded points that contribute to their overall tour standings throughout this winter.

The Carkeek Park Tyke Hikes are held on Tuesdays through March 29, from 1:30 p.m.-2:45 p.m. at the Carkeek Park Environmental Learning Center. A professional naturalist will guide children through the outdoors using stories, songs, crafts and outdoor activities. Open for kids ages 3 to 6 who are accompanied by an adult. Space is limited. The Surfrider Foundation will host the Clean Water Surfing Classic May 14-15 at Westport. The event will attract surfers from around Washington and includes live music, silent auction and surf-film screenings.

Participants will include surf writer Drew Kampion, author of "Stoked! A History of Surf Culture"; local surfing legend Sonny Owens, and Danny Calohan, famed surfboard manufacturer/shaper.

Northwest Trek Wildlife Park in Eatonville will offer free admission to up to four children, ages 17 and younger, with one paying adult during the Kids 'n' Critters Naturefest through Monday.
