The Washington Council of the Federation of Fly Fishers will host the Northwest Fly Casting Expo 9 a.m.-5 p.m. Sept. 25 at Tolt River-John MacDonald Park in Carnation. The event will emphasize education and outreach to the general public, along with a range of casting and fly-fishing classes for beginner to advanced fly fishers, and a special youth program. Classes will be taught by master or certified instructors, and a clinic will be offered on the federation's casting-certification process. A competitive casting event will include distance, accuracy and skill components with a new Danish fly-casting skill component. Cost is $25 adults, $10 youths. The weigh-in stations are at Bush Memorial Park in South Bend and Tokeland Marina in Willapa Bay. The fishing boundary is Willapa Bay (Marine Catch Area 2-1), including the Willapa River and tributaries. Guest speaker Vince Malernee from Wooldridge Boats will talk about fishing the Chehalis River, and Lindon Greene will discuss the Fraser/Vedder River Club Outing on Oct. 8-10. Jim Tuggle, fishing writer and guide, will present a program on saltwater fishing in Alaska. The course will be set on Insanity, a trail featuring fall-line riding with tight trees and super-technical sections. The event includes the Columbia Brewery Brewfest and musical entertainment. Helen Thayer, a Snohomish County resident who at age 50 became the first woman to walk solo to the North Pole, will host a program 11:45 a.m.-1:45 p.m. Sept. 14 at the Quality Inn at Interstate 5 and 128th Street Southeast in South Everett. Thayer also trekked 2,400 miles across the Sahara Desert at age 58. Helen and her husband, Bill, were the first non-Indians to kayak two remote Amazon rivers, and three years ago, the pair crossed the Mongolian Gobi Desert on foot. The Thayers' most recent adventure was in the Canadian Yukon and the Arctic to study wolves. Helen Thayer will read from her book "Three Among the Wolves." Cost is $20 per person with lunch. The Sky Valley Chapter of Trout Unlimited will meet at 7 p.m. Sept. 14 at the PUD Building at 120 E. Fremont St. in Monroe. Guest speaker is Al Hazelquist of Big Al's Tackle Company. Details: 425-488-6885 Skagit Valley College in Mount Vernon is hosting boating classes on navigation and voyage planning Sept. 25-Nov. 13. The class on navigation for recreational boaters will cover selection, maintenance and correction of charts and publications; plotting; use of radar; GPS chart plotting; depth sounders; maneuvering; line handling; marlinespike seamanship, and weather observation. Cost is $70 per person. The voyage-planning class covers basic seamanship for the coastal cruiser, and how to develop a voyage plan, including routes, weather considerations, resources, contingencies, port calls, fuel, provisions, permits and licenses.
