Outdoors beckons during Greenway Discovery Days

Interested in some cross-state travel? Greenway Discovery Days this weekend will showcase communities and parks and the general outdoors along Interstate 90's 100-mile green corridor. From Seattle to Thorp, Kittitas County, explore some of Washington's evergreen territory; just avoid stepping on the banana slugs.

Seattle

FRI Greenway Discovery Days kicks off as students from Alki Elementary gather at the Birthplace of Seattle Monument to decorate the sidewalk with chalk pictures celebrating the Greenway. Greenway Trust President Bill Chapman and Seattle Mayor Greg Nickels speak. 10-10:45 a.m. tomorrow, Alki Avenue Southwest between 62nd and 63rd Avenues S.W.

Mercer Island

SAT See the sculptures along the gallery walk at I-90 Outdoor Sculpture Gallery on Sunset Highway and meet the artists, 11 a.m.-1 p.m. Saturday.

Bellevue

FRI Kelsey Creek Farm is offering a tour (2-3 p.m. tomorrow). Watch the farm animals (9:30 a.m.-3:30 p.m.) and enjoy the Frazier pioneer cabin, built in 1888 (noon-4 p.m.). Farm is at 13204 S.E. Eighth Pl.

SAT Canoeing and kayaking demonstration (1 p.m. Saturday) at Enatai Beach Park along with free canoe and kayak rentals (Saturday and Sunday), 11 a.m. to 6 p.m., 3519 108th Ave. S.E.

Issaquah

SAT Issaquah Fish Hatchery tours with fish guides at 11 a.m., 1 and 3 p.m. Saturday, and a kids' Fish Fact Find (2-4:30 p.m.) with prizes for answering questions about salmon, 125 W. Sunset Way.

SAT Concert for the Greenway with the Alex Stark Jazz Combo, Cascade Cut-Ups, Primo Kim & Friends with Gretchen Christopher from The Fleetwoods, 1-6 p.m. Saturday, Issaquah Community Center, 301 Rainier Blvd. S.

Preston

FRI Square dance and dessert potluck, Preston Community Center, 7-10 p.m. Saturday, 8625 310th Ave. S.E.

Snoqualmie

SAT, SUN Northwest Railway Museum offers guided tours and discounted tickets for vintage-train rides to Snoqualmie Falls, 9 a.m.-5 p.m., 38625 S.E. King St.

North Bend

SAT Meadowbrook Farm, a broad open space at the base of Mount Si, will be the site of kite flying, children's games, Zydeco music and dance lessons, and a bonfire, 9 a.m., 1711 Boalch Ave.

SAT As part of BikeSummer 2004, Cascade Bicycle Club will lead a free 55-mile ride from Ballarat Avenue, North Bend (between Fourth and Fifth streets) to Snoqualmie Pass and back. Riders will depart at 9 a.m.

Cle Elum

SUN Attend the dedication of the renovated South Cle Elum Depot along Milwaukee Avenue, 2 p.m. Tours and covered-wagon rides at various times throughout the day.

Roslyn

SAT Suncadia Resort hosts a star-gazing party and cook-out, 8:30 p.m., 3271 Bullfrog Road.

Thorp

FRI-SUN Visit the historic Thorp Mill and view the handmade wooden machinery inside, 9 a.m.-5 p.m. Thorp will showcase a history project and art show, along Thorp Highway.
