Union Rags beat News Pending by 4 lengths to take the Grade II Fountain of Youth Stakes for 3-year-olds at Gulfstream Park in Hallandale Beach, Fla. Union Rags confirmed his status as one of the early favorites for the May 5 Kentucky Derby.

Union Rags wins in Florida

Union Rags beat News Pending by 4 lengths to take the Grade II Fountain of Youth Stakes for 3-year-olds Sunday at Gulfstream Park in Hallandale Beach, Fla.

Union Rags, trained by Michael Matz and ridden by Julien Leparoux, confirmed his status as one of the early favorites for the May 5 Kentucky Derby at Churchill Downs in Louisville. The colt ran 1-1/16 miles in 1 minute, 42.68 seconds and paid $4.40 as the second wagering choice in the $400,000 race.

Front-running Discreet Dancer, favored at 4-5 odds, faded to third in the field of seven.

Union Rags had been off since finishing second to Hansen in the Grade I Breeders' Cup Juvenile on Nov. 5 at Churchill Downs.

Meanwhile, it was announced Ramon Dominguez has won the George Woolf Memorial Jockey Award after a nationwide vote of riders. He will receive the trophy next month at Santa Anita in Arcadia, Calif.

Vonn sets Super-G record

Lindsey Vonn of Vail, Colo., won a World Cup super-giant slalom in Bansko, Bulgaria, to become the career leader in Super-G victories.

Vonn has won 18 Super-G events; she previously shared the record with Austrian Renate Goetschl.

Vonn won in 1 minute, 15.66 seconds and runner-up Tina Weirather of Liechtenstein was 0.05 seconds behind. Daniela Merighetti of Italy was third.

Italian Blardone prevails

Massimiliano Blardone of Italy won a World Cup giant slalom in Crans-Montana, Switzerland, with a two-run time of 2:33.77. World Cup overall leader Marcel Hirscher of Austria was second, 0.16 seconds behind.

Henderson earns belt, bonus

Ben Henderson, a 2001 graduate of Decatur High School in Federal Way, won the UFC lightweight title with a unanimous decision over Frankie Edgar at UFC 144 on Saturday night in Saitama, Japan.

Henderson and Edgar got $65,000 bonuses because their fight was voted the best one of UFC 144.

Judges scored it 49-46, 48-47 and 49-46 for Henderson, a 28-year-old who fights out of Glendale, Ariz.

Edgar disagreed with the decision.

"I thought I did enough to win," Edgar said. "That's what my guys told me, but those are the breaks. Congrats to Ben."

Liverpool takes League Cup

Liverpool won its first trophy in six years, beating second-tier Cardiff 3-2 in a penalty shootout to capture the League Cup.

It was a bittersweet day for Liverpool captain Steven Gerrard, who collected the team's eighth League Cup title after cousin Anthony Gerrard missed the decisive penalty kick for Cardiff at Wembley Stadium in London. The match was tied at 2 after extra time.

Meanwhile, in the English Premier League, Ryan Giggs marked his 900th match for Manchester United by scoring a stoppage-time winner in a 2-1 victory at Norwich. Manchester United is two points behind league-leading Manchester City.

Donovan to miss match

U.S. standout Landon Donovan won't play in Wednesday's exhibition match against Italy in Genoa because of illness.

Track and field

Lowe sets American record

Chaunte Lowe set an American record in the women's high jump at the USA Indoor Track & Field Championships in Albuquerque, N.M.

The 28-year Lowe cleared 6 feet, 7 ½ inches on her third attempt to surpass Tisha Walker, who went 6-7 on Feb. 28, 1998. Lowe, who is from Loganville, Ga., also won national indoor titles in 2006 and 2010.

Elsewhere

Driver Steven Holcomb of Park City, Utah, won the four-man bobsled world championship in Lake Placid, N.Y., a week after winning the two-man gold medal at worlds. "I'm a little overwhelmed," he said.

Justin Olsen, Steve Langton and Curt Tomasevicz joined Holcomb in USA-1.

• Juan Martin del Potro of Argentina beat Michael Llodra of France 6-4, 6-4 in the Open 13 tennis final in Marseille, France.

Jurgen Melzer of Austria capped his run through the Regions Morgan Keegan Championships with a broken right big toe by beating Milos Raonic of Canada 7-5, 7-6 (7-4) in the final in Memphis, Tenn.

Melzer broke his toe Feb. 16 when he caught his foot in a hotel bedspread in the middle of the night.

Chris Lane of Guntersville, Ala., won the 42nd Bassmaster Classic on the Red River in Louisiana by hauling in 51 pounds, 6 ounces of fish in three days.

Lane, 36, earned a $500,000 first prize.
